Description:
Meet Carter! Carter and his sister, Fern, were being kept out in the SC sun in a filthy 2' x 4' pen without fresh water or food. They would not have survived the summer in those conditions, so we are very thankful that their owner's landlord said they had to go. The owners reached out to rescue to surrender both pups, and that was the luckiest day of their lives. Both dogs were sick on the way to our vet, throwing up who knows what, after scrounging for any food they could find. Fast-forward three weeks, and both puppies have been fully vetted and are in N. VA, ready to start their new life.

Carter was originally fostered as an only dog, but when his foster mom had to travel abroad suddenly he went to a foster home with another small chi playmate. He does better with a buddy and is less anxious and less vocal when left alone. Carter will thrive with another dog buddy in the home to keep him company, and would do best with an owner who has a flexible schedule. His foster mom, Tonia, describes him as a sweet, snuggly. He's a velcro type pup who wants to give kisses and be held. He is very friendly and loyal. He listens well when corrected and responds well to "no." He follows you around the house and like most young pups, wants your time and attention.

This sweet boy is a very social and friendly pup who does well with both men and women and just wants to be in the mix. He's met friends and neighbors and their dogs too, and has done well with ALL. He seems to really like people and makes friends easily. He's wide open to love and attention from all.

Carter is adorable and still learning all the new life has to offer. We recently discovered that when you squeeze a squeaky toy, he will run into his crate and sit there...lol. Good boy, Carter! He loves to play and is learning to play fetch. He likes to run around but does settle down when it's time to hang out and out watch.

Carter has done great with potty training, and has learned to take potty breaks on leash too. He will go potty as soon as you take him outside, which is nice. When they take him out for a walk, he is curious about the birds and squirrels, but hasn't pulled on the leash to tried to chase. Also, he's easy to redirect on leash and will continue to walk with you. He is confident during walks, very curious, and wants to smell and see what's going on. When he sees another dog pass by, he will stop and stare, but no barking or reactivity. To redirect or refocus him, you just call his name and keep walking.

Carter was initally anxious when left alone, but does much better with a pup companion in the home. His foster mom is using a puppy pen, and he sleeps quietly through the night.  He is not a fan of being crated and left alone and will bark in protest. He needs a more gradual introduciton to the crate, and short periods of practice to get him more comfortable in the crate. It's a work in progress.

This super sweet adorable pup is going to make a great companion to some lucky family. Preference will be given to

Owners with small dog and preferably some Chi experience
