Meet Sir Elton John himself….
Sir Elton is on a medical hold and is not expected to be available for adoption for at least 10-12 weeks and possibly longer as we work through his multiple medical needs. We are NOT accepting interest or applications on him at this time and will post when we are on social media. Anyone who cannot respect this request to protect the bandwidth of our all-volunteer team will be moved to the back of the adoption line – NO exceptions (There is always at least that ONE person – or more, when we have a ‘desirable’ breed – please do not be that person)
This sweet 1 yr old Standard Poodle is a stoic and goofy gentleman (how is that possible to be both LOL?) and joins us from @San Jose Animal Care Center
Somebody bought a high-maintenance dog and was unwilling or unable to provide the care he needed and he ended up as a stray with multiple horrific medical issues
He is literally INFESTED with foxtails – there have been over 200 pulled from his ears, eyes, penis, scrotum, rectum, skin, feet, nose and mouth. There are likely more that are completely embedded that have not been found yet. He is looking at multiple removal procedures under sedation and possibly some operations as the new ones make themselves known.
His skin is in terrible shape and his coat was so bad that we had no choice but to have him given a ‘salvage cut’ or a ‘do-over’ as we like to call it (it was medically recommended by our veterinarian and he will never be a show dog, so neither he nor we are concerned about it). He was groomed by our friends at @Backyard Pet Spa and Boutique and will be seen regularly for @TheraClean soaks
He has an issue with one of his eyes that was not caused by, but has been exacerbated by, multiple embedded foxtails. It is currently being treated medically and with a minor procedure but may require the removal of his eye and we will know more in about a month after the infection resolves and the medications have had time to work.
He is also about 8-10 lbs underweight and is on a medical weight gain plan and also has some abnormalities in his labwork that are being monitored.
He also has weak wrists (carpal laxity) which we cannot brace at this time due to the foxtail infestation (too painful) but will require at minimum bracing and physical therapy and possibly surgery.
He is now comfortable on pain meds, antibiotics, prescription soaks and every-other-day veterinary monitoring/procedures, twice weekly medicated soaks at the groomer, a medically monitored weight gain plan, weekly labs and whatever specialty appointments he needs. He is also warm, safe and loved in a foster home in the Sacramento Area who is very well versed in poodles and their needs.
So this guy is facing a mountain of medical issues that we need to further resolve before we even consider placing him for adoption.
We post him now because our all volunteer team receives NO funding other than donations and we cannot provide the high standard of care we do for each and every pet in our care without those donations – all of which go 100% to the animals. If you are a poodle lover or have been touched by his story, please consider donating towards his care.

Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes.
Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet.
Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service.
We thank Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services and give a special thanks to volunteer photographers Tanya, Barbara, Kristy, Christine, Teressa and Natalie.  We are on all social media at @umbrellaofhope and we invite you to follow us and share which helps more people see and adopt our pets.
To help our ALL VOLUNTEER team rescue more senior, special needs, medically needy and hospice animals (and a few "typical" ones along the way, please consider making a tax-deductible (TAX ID 45-4103375) donation online at www.paypal.me/UOH or Venmo @umbrellaof-hoperescue or Zelle beourpet@gmail.com.
