Description:
Meet our sweet Captain!

Saved a couple weeks ago from a Lancaster puppy mill, Captain is a 2 ½ month old German Shepherd. He was unable to be sold, so we were able to scoop him up for rescue. He immediately went into foster care with a local rescue friend to evaluate his needs.

For the good news – behaviorally, Captain is perfect and a total dreamboat. He is a Velcro dog that loves his people very much. He insists on being with his foster mom 24/7. He is being lovingly fostered with a whole host of other animals – dogs, cats, chickens, cow, horses, emu… you name it, he met them on her farm and did great with them.

For the harder news – Captain has a curved spine (a hunchback) that affects him in several ways. His back legs don’t work as great, and while he works on strengthening them, his back is a bit like a drunk sailor, swaying left to right. He is able to run and walk independently, he just does it bit differently. The condition of his spine is permanent and non-progressive, though as he ages, he may need help with any arthritis changes. His foster momma tried using a wheelchair with him but for now, he refuses it and will sulk and go on hunger strikes. Sadly, the spine also affects his continence – he is able to go to the bathroom all by himself but he does not know he is doing it. Currently (and for the rest of his life), he wears diapers to help keep the accidents down. That means he will need a family committed to helping him with sanitary cuts, frequent baths and generally keeping him hygienic and clean.

There is certainly lots to think about as Captain would be a big undertaking for any family. He absolutely promises to repay that work with a lifetime of devotion, love, silly antics and snuggles. He is looking for a family that is experienced with special needs dogs. He would really like to have other dogs in the home to keep him company – playing around with them not only helps him get some energy out and with his mental wellbeing, but also strengthens his legs. The perfect home would be a working farm or other similar setting where his person can be with him all day and outdoors a lot.
