Sammie was picked up by an employee of Godbey Creek as an owner surrender after having been nearly starved to death. We do not know the full background of what happened but this pitiful fellow was so weak he was unable to stand and had to be carried. Taken immediately to our veterinarian where he was stabilized and monitored for weeks, this large frame dog arrived weighing only 27 lbs. and was an emaciated skeleton. After a tremendous amount of love, attention, diligence, dedication, trail and error and fortitude by the staff at Village Way Veterinary, Sammie began to slowly make progress and was released to the care of Godbey Creek Canine. Initially he was fed only with his head straight up in the air so he could swallow correctly and his body had to slowly relearn how to process food to renourish. Wonderful, caring and giving donor families contributed to help Sammie. We are forever grateful. Above all, this sweet hound thanks you. The perilous part of Sammies journey is finally behind him and he now looks forward to the next phase of his journey - - the safety and sanctuary of a new home and new family. Now weighing TWICE his original weight, Sammie can still gain a little more. He licks and loves every human he meets and our volunteers and caregivers adore this humble soul who has been through so much. This estimated 6-7 year old hound loves to lie in the sun, thoroughly loves his walks, thrives on rolling in the grass for a good back scratch and is crazy about his toys. He s learned to ride in the car and enjoys it as well as a good hike. While Sammies bark belies that of a hound, we often think we can see a little boxer and perhaps pittie .its hard to guess his heritage. The right family for this fellow will be a compassionate person who can understand what he has been through. He is gentle, has no food aggression, can eat and swallow normally and has never met a stranger. Sammie is very fond of the female dogs and gets along with most of the male dogs hes been introduced to. He is NOT good with cats. We recommend he be an only pet. And, we would love for this deserving fellow to have a fenced in yard. Sammie has never soiled his kennel and we know he will be easy to housetrain.
