Meet Rico A stunning 3 year olds xolo mix. Yes you heard that right, xolo mix. We found Ricos mom in the mountains in labour, she was a fully hairless xolo, she gave birth to 12 puppies in our care, Rico being one of them. Rico was adopted and with his family for 3 years. Due to the stress his mom was in during her pregnancy and labour, this carried over to some of her pups. When with us Rico loved dogs, loved people and was a happy boy. He was adopted and sometime in the nearly 3 years with his family, he started to develop issues with other dogs, and because his family had another dog, they decided to tell us they could no longer keep him as he injured their dog. We wish circumstances were different for this boy and that we knew sooner so we could have worked together to curb these behaviours as soon as they started, but we can go back in time and now we are looking for Ricos forever people who can take this special and smart boy for who he is and work on his behaviours with him. Rico is in a foster home right now who is doing great with him, but the can not keep him forever. Here is LOTS if info from Ricos foster mom: Rico is a very loving goofy boy. He loves to play chase, he loves attention from his person, he learns very easily. He is a medium energy dog and food motivated. He has learned to wait for our command for him to start eating. We have been working on his reactiveness towards other dogs. So far, we have some good days. As long as he doesn’t feel threatened by the other dog like barking at him, staring at him, he is fine. He would whine but that’s about it. At the end of the day, he just wants to be a good boy and be with his person So far his reactiveness to other dogs has lessened. We carry a can of coins, and when we see another dog coming, we shake it once, kind of a reminder. If he started whining and focuses on the other dog, we shake it twice, to get his attention shifted. Its harder when he is in that mode of reaction, so sometimes, the shaking won’t work so we have some other tricks to snap him out of his mode that we can share with adopters. It is work when it comes to other dogs, but so far we have more good than bad days. At the end of the day, all he really wants is to be with his person, cuddling, playing or simply just being by your side.Rico loves people. He loves to please his people. If a stranger comes he is a little warry for a moment but once they offer a treat or play with him, he will consider them his bff and smother them with kisses. Small children is an iffy as he is big and strong and he can be very playful. He loves to play hard so big kids are ok. As for his training, we have been doing structured walks, he walk very well on leash and does not pull. We are working on his call backs. He is good but not when he is distracted. He will wait to be called to start eating. He will sit on command when waiting for the walk sign to come on at the crosswalks. Rico is muzzle trained as this is just a layer of safety for everyone and it does actually make him feel more at ease. Having said that about his reactiveness, he seems to be able to tolerate dogs that are chill and do not threaten him. Rico at this time would prefer to be the only dog in the house He has been fine with cats in the past so a home with a cat could be possible we would just want to retest this. Rico is available for meet and greets. Please email cass@mexpup.com or submit an application on mexpup.com to meet him He deserves a home to call his own and has so much love, adventure and companionship to give to his people
