Meet Bennie (and the Jets) – Sacramento Area of CA

“Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet?

Ooh, but they're so spaced out, B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets

Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful

Oh Bennie she's really keen

She's got electric boots, a mohair suit

You know I read it in a magazine, ohh-oh

B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets” – Elton John

Bennie is a ~2 yr old, 15 lb Dachshund and Chihuahua Mix who joins us from Kern County Animal Services where he was turned in as a stray.

Are you patient? Kind? Patient? Gentle? Patient? If so, keep reading. If patience is not your strong suit, then Bennie is not the dog for you.

Bennie is VERY shy and has had some past trauma associated with the leash as he finds it VERY scary. He has made great strides in the week that we have had him. But he needs kindness, patience, a gentle hand and love. He would greatly benefit from shy dog classes (they do exist but take some work to find) and if he completes one, we will refund his adoption fee in full. Shy dogs benefit greatly from appropriate socialization and for being rewarded from performing commands when asked. We are looking for a home who is willing to do this (please mention this in your email/application).

Bennie is healthy and has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and is free of parasites.

He is crate trained and seems to be housebroken although we have not given him much room to have an accident (he is well-managed).

He gets along well with other dogs and seems to take cues from them on how not to be shy. He has not been formally tested with cats, but when he was in a ‘halfway house’ between shelter and rescue he was in a home with cats and did not bother them.

Once he loves you – he LOVES you. He has really done well with his foster moms and is sweet and submissive and likes to have his belly rubbed.

Right now, we are only going to recommend him for a home that is calmer with any children who live there to be 10+ -- we do not feel that he would be a bad match for younger children in that he would be aggressive, but he is shy and does well without stompy feet and T-Rex noises. Maybe once he settles in, we can revisit this and if you have a younger child who is more ‘tea-party’ than ‘superhero’ then we can chat

Bennie has only been crated in the car and does well… we do not think he would have any problems uncrated in the car but we have just not tried it yet.

His one area that needs work is the leash. He is most afraid of it from putting it on (harness helps more than collar) to walking on it but he has made great progress in just a few days and is doing so much better. He is leashed in the house to practice with it and has even graduated to trying the stairs with it on and this is HUGE for him. He will need lots of practice and patience but we see him going on leashed walks within 4-6 weeks of adoption if he is given praise and positive reinforcement. We would like to know your plan for this in your email/application.

He is fostered in the Sacramento Area of CA and will only be available to people willing to come to him to adopt

Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes.
Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet.
Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service.
We thank Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services and give a special thanks to volunteer photographers Tanya, Barbara, Kristy, Christine, Teressa and Natalie.  We are on all social media at @umbrellaofhope and we invite you to follow us and share which helps more people see and adopt our pets.
