Meet Leyla! UPDATE 6-24-22: Here is the most recent update from Leylas foster, showing the progress she has made: "Leyla is the sweetest, most loving, affectionate dog with humans. She is happy go lucky and low maintenance, She loves children of all ages and meeting new people. She enjoys her routine of relaxing, playing fetch, and getting cuddles. She is fully crate trained and completely comfortable in her crate all night." UPDATE 5-22-22: Here is the latest update from Leylas foster family: Leyla had a behavioral assessment on 5-5-22 and the trainer stated "I do believe Leyla is dog aggressive and it is not solely about being on the leash or having a boundary frustration." We have been working on counterconditioning and desensitization training, however she would not be the type of dog to go to dog parks nor beaches. She would need to be the only pet in a home. UPDATE 4-25-22: Here is what Leylas foster family has to say: Leyla is such a sweet girl. She is a true inspiration being a tripawd, shes so happy and excited to play and doesnt let it hold her back one bit. Her determination is remarkable, sometimes I wonder if she even realizes she only has three legs. Having a dog like this is a daily reminder of true resilience and perseverance, she is a champion. She enjoys her family time and focused attention with us, but also can have alone time for relaxation. She just loves her time and attention from humans, she really likes to cuddle and get love. She has learned to not enter the house unless invited when the door is open, and we are currently teaching her how to sit. She is also now leash trained and has enjoyed her walks with us. She enjoys car rides. She is crate trained with no accidents throughout the night, she barks a little bit at first but then settles down for the whole night. She really enjoys playing with her toys, and playing fetch. She has a typical lab personality and look. She is not a barky dog. She will need continued training and socialization (like any dog). She enjoys children and has done very well with our 3 children ages 4, 6, and 8. We are currently in the process of assessing how she will be reacting and interacting with other dogs. She is such a gem, we love her. ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY: This little beauty was rescued from the streets of Tijuana in January by a good Samaritan, who saw her get hit by a car. Her rescuer took her to the veterinarian, who immediately stabilized her and a couple days later had her front leg removed as it was beyond repair. The family helped her recover in their home, but they they were renting a small apartment with a tiny little patio. They were unable to find help for her, so they kept her on the tiny patio most of the time, as they were not able to have dogs. But they were determined not to let her loose in the streets again.
Fast forward a few months and they contacted ARWOB in April and we were able to take her in. She is currently boarding at the vet in San Diego where she is being spayed and having her medical needs taken care of. The staff loves her and they say she is a happy-go-lucky and active young dog, who does not know she is supposed to be a "special needs" girl. She doesnt let anything hold her back, not even the loss of her front leg. If you are looking for a sweet, active and loving young black Lab mix, this girl would love to find a loving family of her own. We do not know how she is with cats, but you are welcome to request a foster-to-adopt trial to make sure she is a good match for you and your family. She is available on/after 04/18/22.
If you are interested in meeting this sweet girl, please submit an online application at www.arwob.org right away.
