Miss Xena at 4-5 years old, has defied death twice and has a zest for life we have never seen in any other dog! Two years ago while she was with her original owner, Xena was diagnosed with a fatal uterine infection (pyometra). Not having the funds for the $2500 surgery, we raised the money to save her life. One year later, Xena was very ill and days from death. Her owner had no clue what was going on, nor did we. Xena was surrendered to our care. After days and days of hospitalization locally and at speciality clinic in Chicago, she was diagnosed with the treatable fungal infection that invades the lungs; blastomycosis. We immediately got Xena on a daily medication to kill the spire air borne fungus that was invading her body. Once again, a miracle she’s still on this Earth with us and with the amount of loving and fun personality she has. Here’s more from Xena’s foster: Hi I am Xena!!! I love people and am happiest when I am around my people. My wiggle butt makes my whole body wiggle when I see an old friend or get to meet someone new. I am good with all ages although I do still jump up so will need caution when meeting younger children. I love to cuddle under soft cuddly blankets. They are my favorite!!! I may love my Sox blanket the best but any blankie will do, even if it’s a Cubs one… ? I am approx 4 - 4 1/2 years old. My foster mom says I am a very good girl - one of the best she has had. My foster mom often leaves me for up to 4-5 hours without having to kennel me. I usually sleep while she’s gone (especially if she takes me on a nice walk before she leaves) but I also love to stay busy with knee/marrow bones or kibble toy games. My tail wags a lot. So much so that hitting the kennel bars can break it open. (Happy tail) but I don’t mind the kennel at all. Sometimes I just go in it to chill out all on my own. I love my people sooooo much so would love a home that I can curl up on the couch and watch tv with my people. I can take over your bed if you let me but it’s just because I want to show my person how much I love them!!!!! And I love being pet. That’s why I keep nudging your hand with my nose. Pet me please!!!! I also do great on car rides and my foster lives to take me in her Jeep where the sun shines in my head and the wind blows through my fur!!! I’m doing okay on leash walks but do pull a bit still - especially if I spot a little creature to chase. I’m a little apprehensive around other dogs as I haven’t met many. My trainer says that I could have a dog bestie as long as we were introduced slowly and my new friend is on the calmer side. Did they tell you I almost died twice??? So I just like to chill. My name is Xena - you know, the warrior Princess!!!! Almost all of the blasto is out of my system by taking a daily medication. There’s so little left that you’d never know it’s there. I’m such a happy girl! Once my blasto is gone, it’s gone for good! I’ve been with my foster for almost 10 months and am ready for my forever home. My organization will continue paying for my daily medications, until the blasto is gone for good! If you are looking for the sweetest, most loving, and fairly well mannered gal then I am your gal. My foster says I can stay as long as I need to but I would really like to find my forever. I’ve been through a lot, and I’m ready for my permanent home. Xena is spayed, vaccinated and chipped. Meds will be provided for her. She has no adoption fee but a donation would be great.
