Introducing KIWI!
6 month old female Standard Poodle
LOCATION: Pensacola FL 
NEEDS: A special home for a special little girl, a fur buddy to play with.

Kiwi is a 15 pound 6 month old Standard Poodle (born March 14th). When we were contacted about Kiwi we were told she was a swimmer puppy and her owners did not expect her to live long. As you know special needs dogs always have a place in our hearts so we took her in to see what we could do for her. After visits with vets and specialists what we found out was that Kiwis little walk is caused by hip dysplasia from a birth defect. She was seen by an orthopedic specialist and he does not recommend surgery. There was a concern about whether or not her hips would change as she grew (she came in at 4.6 pounds) so we held Kiwi for further evaluation until she was old enough to be spayed to see what would happen as she grew. She had X-rays last week to check on her growth and to see if anything else needed to be done, and the result is the same. No surgery recommended because Kiwi is up and walking. Even though it looks awkward, the surgeon says if it aint broke dont fix it! Kiwis official diagnosis is Sacrocaudal Dysgenesis, a congenital disorder of the spinal cord most often seen in dogs who are bred to be tailless. This deformity can lead to the inability to control portions of the hind end. In addition to her funny walk Kiwis anus is located too high on her butt. While most dogs can poop and walk away without issues, Kiwis poop sometimes slides down her butt. Much like a baby, she might need her hiney wiped clean when she comes in from going potty. Her foster mom keeps a packet of baby wipes by the door and gives her a quick swipe when she comes in the door and thats pretty much all there is to it. Kiwi is one of the sweetest, most affectionate little dogs you could ever hope to meet. She LOVES to give hugs. And by hugs, we mean she wraps her little paws around you and really HUGS you. She gets along with all people that she meets and everyone loves her. Shes really an amazing dog. Kiwi gets along well with all dogs, both big and small, and really should have a fur buddy to play with in her new home. She loves to play tug o war, play chase and wrestle with her doggy friends. We have not had her around cats and she probably would be fine in a home with kids although we would recommend older since she has not been tested and she does have that deformity. She cannot be left on furniture unattended as she does not need to jump of anything, like a bed or couch. Kiwi loves treats and has a good appetite. At night she sleeps curled up in a doggy bed in the bedroom. Kiwi is potty trained, and uses a doggy door. A fenced yard is preferred but not necessary in the right home. Kiwi has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, fecal tested, has been started on heartworm prevention and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. *We are located in Pensacola Florida. Applicants should live within a 1-2 hour drive to Pensacola. Puppies, dogs with pending vet appointments, and dogs with behavioral issues are only adoptable within a 1 hour drive to Pensacola.
*We are a foster-based rescue and do not have a facility. Our dogs live in private homes in and around the Pensacola area until they are adopted.
