Drax is a 7 month old German Shepherd Dog that was surrendered to the shelter with his brother, who has since been adopted, by the breeder who was unable to sell them. Drax was stepped on by his mother as a young puppy and sadly the breeder provided no medical care, which resulted in him dragging his hind end. We brought Drax to a veterinary neurologist that confirmed a fracture in his spine and infection set into the bone. Surgically fusing the spine of a growing large breed puppy is risky so the doctor recommended medical management instead. Just days after starting treatment, Drax was standing and trying to be a playful puppy! His first 3 months with us he was on strict cage rest to heal, while we kept his mind busy with puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and all the cheese he wanted. He is now able to have monitored play with his foster brothers, which he absolutely loves! He has also began his physical therapy to help correct his spine and build his muscles to help him stand straight. Between water treadmill, daily stretches and doggy workouts we are hopeful he will be able to walk like hes supposed to and have already seen great improvement! He is an early riser and loves his one on one time with his human. Even though Drax enjoys his snuggles, he has a lot of energy so he encourages play time all the time. Drax is very smart and loves his puzzle times, but his favorite of all time is to take a giant rope and run around the house with it while his foster brothers chase him. He is a goofy fella that enjoys making his foster family laugh with his antics! Drax will need a family that is familiar with the breed and can offer training and patience and he is still a puppy and learning. Because of his back injury, he also has a little urinary incontinence and has to wear belly bands to prevent dribbling. We are hopeful that he will be able to grow and heal out of that but we dont know for sure just yet. If interested in adopting, please fill out the adoption application on our website at animalluvrs.org, or email us at aldr@animalluvrs.org for more information. All of our adoptable rescues have a clean bill of health (unless otherwise stated), spayed/neutered, vaccinated (age-appropriately), tested (FeLV/FIV for cats, HW for dogs over 6 months of age), current on flea and heartworm prevention and microchipped. This is all included in their adoption fee that goes in as a donation to help us cover their medical costs and continues to help other animals in need.
