Description:
Peter Rabbit is a ~15 month old male Great Dane. He made his way to Great Dane Friends through no fault of his own, and man is he lucky to have found this group! Peter was 20-30lbs underweight, heartworm positive, with a skin and salivary gland infection, AND a fractured and dislocated hip. This poor guy likely spent his short life outside on a chain and may have been hit by a car, causing his injuries.

Once in his foster home, Peter started to get the love and attention he was deprived of all of his life. With the heartworms and other issues managed, his foster parents began the journey of getting him a brand new shiny hip! Leading up to the surgery, Peter worked on building muscle on that leg through water therapy sessions. In August, Peter traveled to Ohio State University to receive a total hip replacement. Peter will now start the 12 week recovery journey, which will hopefully have a new family at the end! With his hip replacement, he should regain 90-95% mobility in that leg, and not require further intervention. However, Peter will need to be neutered in ~6 months and will need proactive antibiotics before any future surgeries due to the hip replacement.

Peter is a goofy puppy. Hes a toddler in a giants body. His foster family has been working on his manners and impulse control, but he will need continued reinforcement. In his new home, he will need a patient family who is willing to work with him on his training, leash manners, and socialization - things that hes unable to work on while in recovery. Hes a big boy who has lots of energy and doesnt quite know his size, so we recommend a house with children 8+ who are comfortable with giant dogs.

Peter would do well in an active household without any pets or in a house with dog companions, so long as his fur-friends are high-energy and comfortable setting boundaries with Peter. He does live with cats now, but will chase if the cats run. For this reason, we recommend only very dog-savvy cats in his future home.

Peter is very trustworthy in the home and prefers to free-roam when his humans arent around. He loves to hang out with you in the kitchen while youre cooking dinner, snooze on his bed or the couch while youre watching TV, or play with toys while you work from home. At night, he will happily sleep in a dog bed at the foot of his humans bed. Peter rides great in the car and does well at the vet, even making all of the staff fall in love with his sweet puppy eyes!

Peter Rabbit is a sweet boy who needs a family to show him the love he was so deprived of as a puppy. His new family will need to recognize the hardships hes been through, be patient as Peter gets comfortable in the new home, and be willing to invest time in his training and development.*****Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love covers NC and surrounding states for adoptions. We require a fenced yard (exceptions made on a case by case basis - NO exceptions for puppies or deaf/vision impaired dogs - no invisible fencing), that stairs in the home be covered with some sort of slip resistant material to prevent injury, that all other animals in the home be up to date on vaccinations as well as spayed/neutered and that all dogs live inside as a part of the family. Our approval process consists of an application, vet and reference checks, phone interview and house check. Please email us for an application or if you have any questions.*****
