Fancy rats are intelligent and with training they can even learn to come when their name is called. They are good climbers, are curious and like to interact with people. They live approx. 2-3 years and do best with a cagemate of the same gender. 

They need a habitat with a solid surface and prefer a multi-level home. A habitat should be large enough for a food dish, water bottle, a hiding house and climbing toys. Solid surface exercise wheels can be used. Their front teeth never stop growing so they need chew toys.
