Hippo is our sweet mellow 7 year old lady rescued from a puppy mill. She is approx. 18 lbs of love!

Hippos favorite past time is snoozing on the Kunda bed, under foster moms desk, in an open door kennel or just about anywhere near her person. She loves pets and freeze dried treats. She has moments of play but mostly she just wants to hang with her person. She is in a home with other dogs and mostly does well. She has moments of resource guarding and receives bones and her meals in her crate. She is doing much better about this now that she is acclimated to the home and understands she doesnt need to protect and defend her special items. 

Hippo has done well with older children (8+), but small fast moving children make her nervous. She will do better in a home where small children do not live, visits from children would be fine as long as she has a safe place to retreat. 

Hippo walks well on a leash and is great in the car. She likes to ride on the console and watch where she is going. She does need help getting in and out of the car. 

Hippo did have a mammary mass that was determined to be cancer. The mass has been removed and the cancer is gone. However, she may get another mass on a mammary gland in the future and should be monitored by the adopter and be seen by a vet if one develops. She also has had some allergies and has received a few allergy injections. Its hard to know if this is seasonal and environmental and could potentially not be a problem in a new environment. She has one ear canal that is very narrow making her prone to ear infections. Care should be taken to keep that ear dry and clean. 

Hippo is crate trained, however, she prefers to sleep with her person at night. She sticks to her space on the bed and is just happy to be near you. Hippo spent years in a pen, sleeping alone and we want her to never have to go through that again, so if sleeping in bed with you is a no, then Hippo is not for you. This little lady asks for very little and we want to ensure when she is particularly fond of something we make that wish remain part of her new home. 

Hippos adoption fee is $315 to help us cover some of our expenses. She is spayed, current on vaccines, microchipped, received a dental, and on monthly flea and heart worm prevention. Visit leiashope.org for an application. 

WE DO ADOPT OUT OF THE AREA, HOWEVER, WE DO NOT SHIP NOR ARRANGE TRANSPORTS. YOU WILL HAVE TO COME TO DECATUR, IL TO MEET THE DOG. IF FLYING, DOGS MUST FLY IN THE CABIN AND THE EXPENSE OF THE HEALTH CERTIFICATE IS ON THE ADOPTER.

THE APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED BEFORE WE CAN START THE PROCESS. 

IT CAN TAKE AT LEAST 7 DAYS TO PROCESS AN APPLICATION SOMETIMES LONGER DEPENDING ON VOLUNTEER AVAILABILITY AND NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED SO PLEASE BE PATIENT AS WE ARE VOLUNTEERS WITH FAMILIES AND FULL TIME JOBS AND DOGS OF OUR OWN TO CARE FOR.
