We dont know what Sapphires past included, but it appears her family took relatively good care of her. Our vet believes she is already spayed and although we did get her a dental, the vet said her teeth were in good shape! She appears to have blue dog syndrome, which is a condition in blue/grey colored dogs. It can cause alopecia (hair loss or lack of growth). 

Sapphire had a flea infestation when she came to us and has since been treated, but her hair is a mess! We think she is actually a long hair Chihuahua with alopecia. She may prove us wrong if she begins to grow hair over time. She is skinny as a rail, so we are over feeding her right now to put weight on her. Once she had a bit of roundness between her hip bones we will reduce her intake to get to a stable weight. If she hasnt grown hair by next spring, she likely has alopecia- not a problem, but she will remain scruffy looking. We will note that some of the dogs in our adoptive homes with hair growth challenges have done amazingly with A Farmers Dog dog food! Who knows! She is currently eating Honest Kitchen with great enthusiasm!

Sapphire was described as a biter and aggressive with other dogs. We have found her to be quite different! She LOVES her foster mom and gets along with the dogs- a far cry from aggressive! She has her space and expects respect from other dogs. When dogs are rude, she lets them know and reminds them of her rank and expectations. She was left to fend for herself in a yard with three large dogs when her mom passed away and another family member took her in, so she was a bit traumatized when she came to us- and terrified. With only a  day or two to decompress she  began wagging her tail when her foster mom came near! After a week the other dogs in the home learned her boundaries and gave her respect. All is calm now!

All HEART dogs have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies, kennel cough, distemper, parvo, adenovirus, and hepatitis. All dogs over the age of six months are tested for heartworms and, if they test positive, have either been treated or provided alternative slow-kill treatment. Dogs are provided monthly heartworm and flea prevention. Dogs are also provided additional medical care, as needed. This care may include amputations, wound repair, treatment for skin disorders, dental care, treatment for infection and other medical needs.
