15 weeks (as of 11/13), Dachshund/Terrier Mix, 15lbs, Spayed Female, Expected to Be About 30ish lbs Full Grown We cannot guarantee breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses, though! Please read everything below and submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org if this pup seems like a good fit for your family :) Home Recommendation Puppies do best in homes that are ready to commit to their needs. Raising a puppy is lots of fun but we wont beat around the bush: its also a lot of work. Puppies can be raised in the city or out of the city. They are very adaptable. Puppies need adopters that are full of energy themselves and can keep up with their new four legged best friend. Level of Dog Ownership Experience Needed CHAI is an Intermediate level puppy. This means that ideally the adopter has primary dog ownership of a breed or energy level similar to this pup. At a minimum the adopter should have solid experience doing things like dog sitting, or fostering young dogs or dogs of a similar breed. This means that if youve only dog sat, fostered or owned a senior dog or low energy breed then this isnt the right fit for you. Adopters should have some hands-on experience with taking care of puppies and/or teenagers. Adopters should be comfortable around working breed dogs. Adopters should be ready for everything that entails raising a puppy: lots of training, patience and socialization. All puppies have the potential to develop into the goodest boys and girls but its in the hands of the adopter. Lastly, adopters should truly understand that a puppy is going to go through many developmental phases. Her Foster Parents Say: Chai is super friendly, lovable and energetic but also snuggly. She is crate trained and potty trained. She does well on the leash and is good around people and other dogs. She gets excited for treats and loves carrying the toy around the house with her. Perfect work from home dog, she will nap at your feet all day. She will sleep through the night in her crate and she goes to her crate on her own at bedtime. She knows sit and responds to her name. On the streets shes a head turner, and gets complimented all the time. High energy on her walks, but loves to chill out at home. Shes good about not getting on the couch if you dont want her too. A little mouthy but can easily redirect her to her chew toys. Our Volunters Say: Dramatically unlike how she appears in most photos, Chai is really short and little. So much so that she could be part caterpillar if it werent for her unmistakably canine ways and nimbleness. Her looks and moves get a lot of attention on the street. Picture a joyful piece of beef jerky with a beautiful brindle coat greeting every human and most dogs she passes. Dachshund mix? JRT? She seems to be a sturdily built little shrimp at 15 lbs currently (prob 30 lbs give or take full grown), and the only thing better than her enchanting looks is her 10/10 personality. Friendly, affectionate, eager to explore, smart, fast learner, potty trained, social. Shell need an active lifestyle (60-90 min walk per day plus potty breaks) and plenty of brain games, and shes putting her best paw forward so shell be a treat for the right human able to meet her where shes at as she grows. Energy Level Medium to Higher - - As a teenage puppy and as an adult this pup will need a solid continuous 60 minute walk (at a minimum) in addition to potty breaks/relief walks/short walks. Dont be surprised if this increases to needing a 90 minute walk. Working breed dogs were bred to do jobs so its super important to make sure that they get the right level of exercise and stimulation daily. Working breed dogs need more than just simply being let out in the yard. Personality Friendly As Can Be- - ChaiI is ready to make friends with everyone she meets! Cuddle Factor Medium - - Loves to have some affection but doesnt need to be glued to you. Enjoys a snuggle here and there. Potty Trained Yes - - Chai is potty trained and is doing well with her skills. Crate Trained Yes - - Chai is crate trained Comfy With Strangers? Yes - - She loves to be friends with new people. Social With Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision) Yes - - Okay for a home with kids aged 8 and up. Chai is in a mouthy stage so important to navigate that if shes going into a home with kids. Social With Dogs? Yes - - Loves to say hi to other dogs on the street. Would be okay in a home with another dog. Social With Cats? Yes - - Fun fact all puppies have the potential to be best friends with a cat. Its on the adopter to help set boundaries with the cat (like not being able to chase the cat). The cat should also be a friendly cat as a puppy is not a great idea for a grumpy cat. Mouthy Play Medium to Higher - - In the mouthy teenage phase. But not horrible could use continued training, have already seen improvements Leash Manners Working on This Skill - - Getting the hang of it! Doing well to adjusting to leash walking. Jumping Manners Will Need to Learn This Skill - - Chai is working on keeping all four on the floor. Very common for puppies her age. Separation Anxiety Might Cry For A Few Minutes - - Chai is on par for her age range. She might cry when first left home alone but then she settles down. She is crated when left home alone. Medical Status Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella Vaccine and Rabies Vaccine. Spayed(females)/Neutered (males) and microchipped. De-wormed upon intake. How Did They End Up With Social Tees Animal Rescue? This pup was originally left anonymously at a high volume shelter in TN where they were at risk of euthanasia. Our rescue partner based down there pulled this dog, had the initial veterinary care done, and transported them to NYC. While in Social Tees care, they are kept in attentive and loving foster homes. Many dogs are rescued from the south because the pet overpopulation problem there is much worse than it is in the northern parts of the country. This seems to be because far fewer people are having their pets spayed/neutered in the south, the climate is warmer so animals are reproducing year round, and the human population in these areas is less dense so there arent enough people to adopt them. In NYC and the surrounding area, we have a large human population, which in turn means the animals find forever homes at a higher rate up here. :)
