Alfie: 2 yr old black & tan male, neutered, undocked tail and uncropped ears. 10", 12 lb. Fully vetted. Rescued from shelter. Meet Alfie! Alfie was rescued from a hoarding situation where he spent most of his young life. He came to us over one year ago, extremely withdrawn and totally unsocialized. This sweet boy saw life as something to be very frightened of and he had no idea how to interact with humans. Even through all of his deepest fears he has never, ever tried to bite us and has gotten along with every dog he has met. Alfie is looking for that special person that will continue to patiently show him that he is safe and loved as he learns to navigate life with humans. It has been very rewarding see this sweet little one bravely challenge his fears and, step by step, take a risk to interact with us. His first two months was spent hiding in his safe space to come out only to run outside to go potty and then return to hiding. Slowly he came out to explore; being with the other dogs, eating with the other dogs, taking treats from our hands, playing with toys, playing with us, sleeping with us, letting us touch him, letting us pet him - all one step at a time. Even the first time he wagged his tail was a huge milestone. We can pick him up to bathe him, check his ears and trim his nails... he still needs to learn to be cuddled. He carefully watches how we interact with the other dogs and takes his cues from them. He wants so badly to get close to us, letting us pet him on his terms until he feels a bit overwhelmed and moves away. He still needs to learn to wear a harness and walk on a leash. Living with Alfie is easy. He is quiet, plays with dog toys and has never chewed on anything that was not his to chew on. He uses the doggie door to go out to do his business and if left alone at home too long will use a pee pad. He is a great companion, enjoys being within sight of his humans and playing with the other dogs. Alfie would love a home with other dogs to play with and take cues from. He just needs a safe space, patience, kindness and love. He really enjoys playing with his foster brother, Willie. It would be incredible if he could find a home that would take them both.
