Update: is has been 5 weeks since his surgery and Barry is doing very well. Now using his leg, we will have him re-assessed and X-rayed by the surgeon and plan for his physiotherapy. Barry arrived a few weeks ago from a hoarding situation, one of 22 dogs surrendered to several rescues. These whippet mixes never saw grass, were contained in a house and received no basic training nor were they even named! He arrived with an old leg injury and within a week had orthopaedic surgery to repair it. Barry has since been in recovery with instructions to avoid running, jumping and everything a ten month old pup so wants to do! A few more weeks of rest and he can slowly begin to have controlled walks and exercise. After his post surgical assessment he will require some physiotherapy and we have one very eager to start once she has the green light from our surgeon. Berry is a very sweet affectionate boy! He loves his people and bonds quickly. He is initially shy, but curious, so will warm up if food and treats offered. He adores sofa cuddles and is quite affectionate once trust is earned. He is working on house training and will go outside if offered the opportunity. Barry’s ideal home would be one close to the city so he can see the physiotherapist for regular visits. A fence yard is ideal as would another dog to help him gain confidence. He truly has had limited experience and exposure to this big wide world out there, so routine and structure are definitely needed. Barry has so much to learn! Leash manners and basic commands are needed, and once more mobile, his foster will begin working on these. Barry can be quite mischievous and loves stealing shoes and adores his squeaky toys! Truly, he is learning what it is like being a dog and will be a joy for his new family. He is very food driven so training will be easy. He hasn’t been around small children, but loves the fosters children, all over the age of 10. In addition, he is great with the fosters large breed dogs as well. Given the right environment, Barry has the potential to be an amazing addition to a family committed to working with him.
