Adoption policy

For over 30 years the Northwoods Humane Society has been serving the animals and people of Sawyer County and the surrounding areas. NHS began as an unsheltered humane society, completely relying on foster homes to serve the animals in need. In response to the increasing number of animals needing housing, the organization built its shelter building outside of Hayward, Wisconsin opening debt free in 1996. In 2018 the Northwoods Humane Society was voted the #8th Humane Society in the state of Wisconsin. The top 10 list is compiled by American Towns Media The mission of Northwoods Humane Society is to provide a sheltered environment for unwanted animals. NHS will work to find appropriate homes for animals, provide medical care as needed, and work to socialize and train animals to increase their success in a home situation. NHS will actively work to promote responsible pet ownership with an emphasis on the need to spay and neuter pets. NHS will work with all factions of the community to address the needs of the animals in the community. Northwoods Humane Societies’ purpose continues to grow and respond to the needs set in front of them. To educate the public on the proper and humane treatment of animals. To administer spay/neuter and emergency medical assistance programs. To provide a “Pet Visitation” program to local nursing homes. To provide a “Pet Education” program to area schools and to the public. To work cooperatively with the Sawyer County Animal Control and Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation Animal Control. To network community resources to help meet the needs of the animals and to operate the NHS Shelter.
